Air source heat pumps are a renewable heating technology that uses sustainable sources to deliver a constant supply of heat & hot water to your property.

One of the main benefits of installing a heat pump in your home is the Governments Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). In light of increasing concerns over climate change and carbon emissions, the government recognises that we need to change the way our homes are heated. Part of this plan is to phase out fossil fuel boilers in favour of low carbon alternatives, like heat pumps and with the continuing rising prices in 2022 this scheme will also help homeowners battle rising energy prices which are set to more than double over the course of the year.
However, one of the current barriers to switching to a heat pump can be the higher upfront cost in comparison to installing a boiler. This is where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme comes in.
The new Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers:
A £5,000 upfront voucher towards the purchase and installation of an air source heat pump
A £6,000 upfront voucher towards the purchase and installation of a ground source heat pump
Any remaining costs towards the installation are then paid by the homeowner.
The idea is that this new upfront incentive will encourage homeowners to make the switch to renewable energy, rather than simply replace their current fossil fuel boiler with a new one.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is just one of the ways in which the UK government is hoping to meet the net-zero emissions target by 2050.

How an Air source heat pump works
A heat pump is a device which uses the refrigeration cycle to capture heat from the air (air source heat pump) In an air source heat pump, a fan blows outside air across a series of fins which contain refrigeration liquid. Heat is absorbed into the refrigeration liquid which turns it into a gas and then the gas is compressed by a compressor.
When the gas is compressed, the temperature increases rapidly. The hot gas is then passed through a heat exchanger to heat the water in your heating circuit. The beauty of a heat pump is that for every 1kw of electricity they use, they will typically output around 4kw of heat into your property, This makes them around 400% efficient. A typical modern gas boiler is around 90% efficient
